Documenting Sex was initiated as a series of talks and panel discussions conceived by artist, Richard John Jones, that accompanied the programme of the first edition of the NYC Porn Film Festival 2015. The programme featured perspectives from within the porn industry but also, crucially, from contemporary art and experimental film. The main themes of discussion are the idea of porn as a document of sexual practice, the pornographer as documentary film-maker, the intimate connection between porn and experimental film and also moving-image work that shows acts of sex but finds itself within other channels of film and video distribution.
Please see the inaugural events produced as part of the NYC Porn Film Festival 2015 in the Past Events section. In this preliminary events cycle, Documenting Sex featured the participation of Barbara Hammer, Julian Curico, Liz Rosenfeld, Marit Ostberg and researchers, archivists and librarians from the New York Public Library, Rutgers University, Dirty Looks NYC, The Leslie+Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art and the Fales Library, NYU.
A series of commissioned articles and text pieces will be published on a sporadic and ongoing basis here.
